The State of Being Content

A Three-Day Devotional by Anita Wamble

Day 1: Contentment Does Not Cancel Your Dreams

Many people think being content means we no longer have hopes or dreams. Others believe contentment means we should never want anything beyond what we already have. Nothing could be further from the truth.

You can be content and still desire to grow. You can appreciate your current home and hope for another. You can thank God for your job while preparing for a new opportunity. You can enjoy where you are while trusting God for where He is leading you.

Contentment does not require you to stop dreaming. It teaches you how to live while you wait.

Paul said he had learned to be content regardless of his circumstances. He knew what it meant to have plenty, and he knew what it meant to go without. His circumstances changed, but he learned to depend on God’s faithfulness through every change.

Notice that Paul said he learned contentment. He developed it by walking with God.

We can learn it, too.

Being content speaks to our inward condition. It means our peace is rooted in God rather than dependent on receiving everything we want. We can acknowledge our needs, pursue worthwhile goals, and still recognize the blessings already in our hands.

What happens when the answer takes longer than we expected? Do we stop enjoying today because tomorrow has not arrived? Do we overlook what God has provided because we are focused on what is missing?

Like Paul, we can learn to trust God in the meantime. Not getting what we want when we want it does not have to rob us of our peace.

Keep praying. Keep preparing. Keep dreaming. And while you do, allow yourself to enjoy the life God has given you today.

Today’s Challenge:
Write down three blessings you currently enjoy and one dream you are trusting God to fulfill. Thank Him for what you have, then surrender the timing of that dream to Him.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for what You have already placed in my life. Forgive me for overlooking today’s blessings while waiting for tomorrow’s opportunities. Teach me to be content without giving up the dreams You have placed in my heart. Help me pursue growth with gratitude and wait with trust. Let my peace rest in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
