Word for Today

June 19, 2018

With so much going on in the world, many people are feeling like giving up. We are going through so much mental stress as we watch world leaders play games with people lives, destroying families and ignoring the needs of their own citizens.

Suicide rates are sky rocketing, terrorist groups are attacking at alarming rates, school shootings are becoming so common-place we can’t keep up with where the latest incident took place and it seems like the 24-hour news cycle is filled with nothing but murder and mayhem. All of this is enough to make even the most faith-filled person wonder if it’s all worth it.

Even in our darkest and most difficult times, God provides light, graciousness and compassion to his children. That light is Jesus; who is the light of the world (John 8:12).

This issue is not that Jesus’ light is going dim, the issue is people are not looking at his light. We have been distracted by the darkness and have taken our eyes off the light, the good, the righteous and the upright.

We need to put our eyes back on the light, which is the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We need to pay more attention to what he has asked us to do rather than peering into the darkness and negativity of the world.

When we put our eyes on Jesus, we become “…the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Matthew 5:14) We become the beacon in a dark world, leading people to the light of Jesus Christ. It’s time to turn our lights on!
