“In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.” Ephesians 4:26 – 27
It amazes me when people, who have treated me badly, said all kinds of evil against me because of my relationship with Christ (Matthew 5:11); which causes me to carry myself differently than non-Christians or carnal Christians, get upset when I say something to them about their actions.
I get responses like, “I thought you were a Christian” or “Are Christians supposed to get angry?” Yes! Christians are human and we get angry too! We are not doormats! We have feelings, hopes and desires just like everyone else and you don’t get to trample on us as if we don’t matter just because we serve Christ!
There is a little thing called righteous indignation. It is when we have been mistreated, insulted and treated unjustly and we’ve had enough. Ever been there? But, no matter how angry we get, we cannot sin.
We have every right to hold our ground but, we can’t seek to get the person back for what they’ve done to us. We have to talk to them, tell them what they’ve done and not allow our anger to fester in our hearts because that is how the devil gets a foothold. (Ephesians 4:27)
God’s plans for our lives includes adversity. Yes, it’s hard to be misunderstood. Yes, it’s difficult to hold your tongue when foolishness and lies are being spoken and yes, it hurts when people you thought were your friends walk away from you when you need them most.
Even when we’re angry, we must obey his commands, and not sin. Remember, whoever obey his command will come to no harm (Ecclesiastes 8:5a). Deal with the issue, not the person. Deal with what they’ve done and do not make it an attack on them.
God’s word is true, “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows” (Galatians 6:7).
